Calacatta marble (also known in its variation as Calacatta gold or oro) is a rare, exceptional marble – it is found only in one place in the world. Along with Carrara marble, Calacatta marble is quarried only in Carrara, Italy. To the untrained eye, both of these beautiful stones may look the same; after all, they’re both mainly white, with predominantly grey veins and streaks.
Unlike Carrara marble, however, Calacatta marble shows a bolder veining pattern , which can range from gold to brown/grey, and much whiter background colour compared to Carrara . This gives it a striking and memorable appearance. Calacatta marble is part of the top range of quality marble that comes from the Carrara area of Italy.
Because of its rarity (and the accordingly more expensive price tag), Calacatta marble is mainly used in interior applications where it is very visible. Projects such as entrance or foyer flooring, wall coverings and kitchen tops are most common. Calacatta marble is also frequently used in commercial applications, adorning executive boardrooms and hotel common areas alike. It’s also often used for book-matched applications for which more uniform marbles are not as well-suited. The more sparse and pronounced veining pattern of Calacatta marble lends itself well to book-matched applications.
